The game
is just
the beginning
“For me, rugby is more than a game, it’s a metaphor for life. Through its highs and lows, it teaches us to shape character, build culture, and develop champions, both on the field and beyond.”
With a coaching career spanning more than two decades, Gary Gold has guided players from every walk of life – across South Africa, the UK, the USA, and Japan. Known for his calm authority and ability to bring out the best in people, he sees rugby not just as a game, but as a yardstick for resilience, unity, and personal growth.
As the game keeps advancing, Gary has dedicated himself to continuously testing, adapting, and applying the analytics of sport – physically, mentally, and emotionally – to create better athletes and hopefully, future coaches.

The Work Efficiency Index
Not every effort shows up in the final score but every effort seriously matters.
Born out of a desire to provide players with accurate, actionable feedback, and to measure the invisible yet invaluable aspects of performance, Gary has developed the Work Efficiency Index (WEI).
WEI measures a player’s in-game contributions based on their actions – not impressions. Every coded match action (from clean-outs and line breaks to penalties and lost balls) is classified as positive, negative, or neutral, with direct video links to encourage review and transparency.

The Children’s Hospital Trust
Gary’s commitment to making an impact off the field is as enduring as his coaching career.
For decades, he has been a dedicated donor to The Children’s Hospital Trust, who supports the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa – the first stand-alone paediatric hospital in sub-Saharan Africa.
In 2019, he was honoured to be named an Ambassador for the Trust. Gary champions access to world-class paediatric care and believes strongly in giving children the chance to live, grow, and thrive.
Rugby Is for Everyone
Rugby’s greatest strength lies in its inclusivity – a game that makes space for all body types, all backgrounds, and all belief systems. It’s a team sport in the truest sense, where everyone has a role, and effort is often more important than perfection.
Gary believes that playing under pressure is never perfect – mistakes are part of the game. That’s why, for him, the cornerstone of rugby is consistency, guided by three simple principles:
- do what you say
- earn trust through actions
- create a culture where people want to be better, not just play better.
He brings this mindset into every environment, from elite international squads to grassroots clinics in rural communities, always championing the idea that rugby should be a place of opportunity and belonging.
“If you’re willing to work extremely hard both physically and emotionally, there’s a jersey with your name on it.”
