The Journey
“Rugby’s always been more than a game to me. It’s where character’s tested, values are built, and champions are created – on and off the field.”
A Golden Era with the Springboks
Gary’s journey with the Springboks began in 2004 when he was brought in by Jake White to implement a revolutionary rush defense system – a strategy he honed during his successful tenure as Head Coach of London Irish in the English Premiership.
From 2008 to 2011, Gary served as Assistant Coach under Peter de Villiers, forming a core part of the management team alongside Backs Coach Dick Muir. Together, they guided the Springboks to one of their most celebrated periods, including:
- Winning the 2009 Vodacom Tri-Nations.
- Defeating the British & Irish Lions in a historic series.
- Securing three consecutive victories over the All Blacks—a record-breaking achievement.
- Being crowned IRB Team of the Year and clinching the number one spot in the world rankings.
Gary’s ability to manage team dynamics and foster a culture of consistency and resilience was instrumental in these successes.
Navigating the English Premiership
In 2012, Gary returned to the English Premiership, taking charge of Newcastle RFC during a challenging relegation battle. Under his leadership, the team won 8 of their final 12 matches, narrowly missing survival by just one point—a testament to his ability to inspire teams under pressure.
His success at Newcastle caught the attention of Bath Rugby, who appointed him as Director of Rugby and Head Coach. During his 22-month tenure, Gary focused on recruitment, team culture, and long-term development. His efforts bore fruit, with Bath achieving:
- A strong third-place position in the Aviva Premiership.
- Unbeaten runs in the LV Cup and Amlin European Challenge Cup.
- A historic victory in the English A League competition.
- 12 players called up for England duty (senior and age group) during the 2014 Six Nations, alongside 7 full internationals.
Though his time at Bath ended prematurely, Gary’s impact on the club’s culture and performance remains a proud chapter in his career.
From Kobe to Kings Park – Japan & The Sharks
After his time in England, Gary’s journey took him to Japan, where he signed a three-year contract with the Kobe Steelers. His role focused on bringing strategic clarity, structure, and cultural cohesion to the squad, drawing on his growing international playbook.
Midway through this journey, an opportunity to return to South Africa as Director of Rugby at the Sharks, under former Springbok captain John Smit, brought Gary back home. Known for his meticulous planning and calm under pressure, he helped guide the Sharks through the complex demands of Super Rugby.
USA Eagles – Building from the Ground Up
Gary helped transform the USA Eagles into a more structured and competitive rugby nation by blending global coaching standards with local potential. Under his leadership, the team qualified for the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan — a significant milestone for USA Rugby. In 2018, the Eagles made history by winning the Americas Rugby Championship with a perfect record, the first team to ever achieve this feat.
Beyond the results, Gary’s lasting impact was in laying the foundations of a high-performance culture within the organisation. After five transformative years, he made the decision to return home to South Africa — proud to have left behind a team with greater belief, structure, and long-term ambition.
Returning to Roots: The Bulls and Beyond
Upon his return to South Africa, Gary joined the Bulls as a senior coach under Director of Rugby Jake White. Tasked with overseeing the team’s defence and contributing to their overall improvement, Gary played a key role in the Bulls’ resurgence.
The Far East Beckons: Next Chapter Begins
Gary joins Head Coach Eddie Jones and the coaching staff of the Japan Brave Blossoms as Defence Coach, bringing his trademark focus on consistency, detail, and clarity to the team’s evolving identity. Working alongside Jones, he plays a key role in shaping the Brave Blossoms’ next chapter, blending tactical precision, strong leadership, and deep international rugby insight to drive performance and culture forward.
